TEMPEST

“Damn, girl. You can pack a punch,” Andre says as his mitts take yet another blow. I slam my fist one more time, for good measure.

We’re in the training center nearly an hour after my meeting with my grandmother. Andre and I agreed to start training today, I just didn’t anticipate how badly I’d need to let off steam.

I didn’t have enough time to develop any sort of expectations around the meeting, and there is obviously an extra layer of weirdness at play with the fact that my grandmother is the ruler of an entire world I am just starting to understand, but the experience was so much more disappointing than I could have imagined. I thought that I would feel some sort of connection to her given that she is the last living member of my mother’s side of the family. Instead, I felt like I should be apologizing for my mere existence. That piece of the conversation I am willing to pack away into a neat little box to deal with much further down the road, however, I can’t understand her apathy towards learning the truth about what happened to my mom.

I still may not know all the details of how my parents came to be on the run, but my mother was the queen’s daughter. She was once her heir to the throne. Queen Madeline could have done something to help her. If they did just leave Versi out of fear of the Knights, she could have stopped the LOP’s manhunt. And once the truth of Daria Payne’s attack was brought to light, she could have had the LOP protect my parents, like they’re doing for me now. The fact that she didn’t tells me everything I need to know about my grandmother.

I could give the queen the benefit of the doubt and believe that my mom never gave her the opportunity to help. But then, the fact my mom would rather go on the run than go to her own mother speaks volumes.

I don’t like her. Worse than that, I don’t trust her. If she’s the last family I have left, I think I'd rather be alone.

I send Andre a weak smile. “Sorry, I have a lot on my mind.”

Andre shrugs before starting to strip off the mitts.

“No worries. You’ve had a supremely weird week. Anything I can help with, chica?” He grabs for the pair of water bottles we perched on the countertop by the wall. He tosses one to me and I catch it easily.

I snort out a laugh as I put the water bottle to my lips. After taking a sip, I say, “Not unless you can tell me how my grandmother can rule the entirety of the preternatural world but can’t find the people who killed her own daughter. Or why the Full Moon Knights seem like these infallible foes.” I throw my hands up in frustration.

“I want to know why my parents were fleeing and why Daria Payne and her brother took such drastic measures to stop them.
